Escrevemos de Tabatinga/Tambaba no litoral sul da Paraíba, cerca de 30km ao sul de João Pessoa. Estamos a poucos quilômetros do ponto mais oriental do Brasil. Aqui é onde o sol nasce e se põe mais cedo em todo o país.

We are in Tabatinga/ Tambaba on the Southern coast of Paraíba, ca. 30 km South of the state’s capital João Pessoa and only a few kilometers from the most Eastern point of Brazil. Here, the sun rises and sets earlier than in any other place in the country.

Ficamos oito dias entre Tabatinga e Tambaba. Porém, apesar de todo este tempo, pela primeira vez não encontramos nenhum projeto concreto ou uma história que gostaríamos de escrever, mas sentimos algo forte. Sentimos que aqui pode ser o princípio da nossa própria história, fomos cativados ao poucos pela natureza do local.

We have been around Tabatinga and Tambaba for about 8 days, but despite all this time, for the first time during this trip, we have not found a concrete project or story we wanted to write about. Yet, we felt something very strong. We felt that this place could be the start of our own story, as, little by little, we were captured by its nature.

Nos primeiros dias nos despirmos frente ao mundo na parte naturista da praia de Tambaba. Em seguida, nos encantamos pela energia do assentamento de agricultores familiares no alto de suas falésias. Caminhando entre Tabatinga e Tambaba, fomos seduzidos pelos formatos destas falésias que perecem falar com diferentes desenhos e cores. Finalmente nos apaixonamos pela mata atlântica que ainda cobre grande parte da região quando visitamos a Arca do Bilú.

In the first days we exposed ourselves to the world on the naturalist beach of Tambaba. Later, we were enchanted by the energy of the farmers’ settlement on top of its cliffs. Walking along the beach between Tabatinga and Tambaba we were seduced by the forms of these cliffs that seem to talk through their different designs and colors. And finally, visiting the Arca do Bilú, we fell in love with the Atlantic rainforest that still covers a big part of the coast.

Para nós, o que torna a área especial se comparada às outras praias da região é a Área de Proteção Ambiental (APA) que protege a mata atlântica, falésias argilosas, e importantes ecossistemas em seu entorno. A proteção da região implicou em certas restrições para edificação, o que somado a outros fatores, freou a ocupação da área. Tambaba permanece ainda hoje quase deserta.

What makes this area special to us compared to the other beaches of the region, is an Environmental Protection Area (APA) that protects the Atlantic rainforest, the clayey cliffs and other important ecosystems in its surroundings. The protection of the region and other factors limited what could be built inside the APA and slowed the occupation of the area. Until today, Tambaba remains almost deserted.

Porém, o que muitos vêem como empecilho, a APA, nós vemos como oportunidade. Seria um desafio delicioso encontrar maneiras de ajudar o desenvolvimento da região, promovendo a inclusão social, sem destruir suas maiores riquezas: as falésias, o ecossistema marítimo, os manguezais e a mata atlântica restante.

While many people see the APA as an obstacle, we see it as an opportunity. It would be a great challenge to help the development of the region by promoting social inclusion without destroying its treasures: the cliffs, the maritime ecosystems, the mangroves and the remaining Atlantic rainforest.

Além de estar inserida em uma APA, Tambaba tem vários outros atrativos. Ela está a poucos quilômetros de João Pessoa, a capital do estado que conta com importante infra-estrutura urbana. Há diversas opções para conexão nacional e internacional: os aeroportos de João Pessoa, Recife e Natal estão a poucas horas de distância. Finalmente, o estado da Paraíba é um dos estados mais verdes do Brasil: aqui ainda há grandes bolsões de mata atlântica intactas.

Besides the APA, there are several other aspects in favor of Tambaba. It is few kilometers South of João Pessoa, the state capital with a good urban infrastructure. There are 3 airports within a few hours driving, João Pessoa, Recife and Natal, offering national and international connections. And finally, the state of Paraíba, is one of Brazil’s greenest: there are still big pockets of intact Atlantic rainforest.

O sul da Paraíba e Tambaba estão sendo descobertos recentemente. O futuro da região ainda é incerto. Ele pode ser qualquer coisa entre brega e exclusivo, ordenado ou desordenado, preservado ou cheio de concreto. Acreditamos, porém, que se nos juntarmos aqueles que já estão aqui poderemos contribuir para que este futuro seja bom.

The South of Paraíba and Tambaba were only recently discovered by tourism and the future of the region is still uncertain. It can become anything between tacky and exclusive, orderly and chaotic, full of nature and full of concrete. We think that joining the people here, we can help to make this future a good one.

Demos um primeiro passo, reconhecemos que nos apaixonamos e pesquisamos sobre oportunidades imobiliárias. Estamos negociando. Agora está com os céus, com a Terra e com os atuais proprietários das terras a decisão sobre nosso futuro. Mas, como ele ainda continua incerto, seguimos viagem para o próximo local com a certeza de que o que tiver que ser será! Torçam por nós!

We made a first step in recognizing that we really like the place and started researching real estate opportunities; and we are negotiating. It is now up to heavens, the land and the current owners what will become of our future. And since the future is still uncertain, we will continue traveling to the next place with the certainty that what has to be, will be! Cross your fingers!
